The upcoming ICMM Workshop on Military Medical Ethics will have as its main topic Ethical Challenges in the Context of Epidemics. It might thus also be interesting for COST action members.

Presentations at the workshop will include case reports from recent deployments to the Ebola affected countries and more theoretical reflections on the ethical issues that arise in the fight against epidemics. Speakers include a wide variety of people coming both from the academic and military sphere. Large room will be given for discussion so that all participants can bring in their experiences and opinion.

You can dowload the provisional program at http://workshop.melac.ch where you can also find more information about the workshop in general and the registration. Places at the workshop are limited and registrations will be processed in the order of their arrival.

We welcome submissions for an STSM to take place before the end of May 2015. STSM’s are networking missions to collaborate with experts in your respective field of interest. Grants of up to 2000 euros are available.

Please send an initial expression of interest and then you will receive advice on how to proceed with the application to Dr Ayesha Ahmad, email address: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Professor Virginia Murray from Public Health England and UNISDR (and a member of our Action since its beginning) spoke in Madrid at our recent Action workshop. At the MC meeting in Porto we agreed to offer assistance from our Action to her work as appropriate. As part of the revision process for the Hyogo Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction, the UNISDR Science and Technical Advisory Group (STAG, of which Virginia is Vice-Chair) has issued a Call for Case Studies. The complete case studies are to be only about 600 words. Further details on the submission process, some examples, and a template to use are available at: http://www.preventionweb.net/english/professional/networks/public/stag/ . This site also has a report on the work of STAG so you can see their aims and objectives.

Although the Call sound very science-based, Virginia says they are keen to have ethics case studies included. This would be an important way to disseminate our work, engage with policy development, and highlight the importance of ethics in disasters. I would encourage you to submit a case study as individuals or as teams. WG1 has been working on case studies, so Kadri Simm (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) has agreed to facilitate those who are looking for colleagues to develop a case study. If you want to form or join a team, please email Kadri and let her know the general topic you would like to work on.

The submission deadline is Oct 31, 2014 for titles of the Case Studies. The full text should then be submitted until the end of november. In both situations, those with a title or case study should send it to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
If you submit a case study, please include "COST Action IS1201: Disaster Bioethics" in your affiliations where stated in the application. Also, please inform Kadri of your submission so that we can note this as a dissemination activity of the Action.
